Jüdische Gelehrte an der Universität Leipzig

juedischegelehrtesachsen.de

The web portal “Jüdische Gelehrte an der Universität Leipzig” (Jewish Scholars at Leipzig University) was created in cooperation between the Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow and the Leipzig University Archive. It provides information on the life and work of Jewish academics at Leipzig University. Based on the biographies and the presentation of participation, discrimination and exclusion of Jewish scholars, highlights are thrown on the complex process of modernization and emancipation in Saxony in the 19th and 20th centuries. Contradictions and distortions also become visible: for Jews, the path to professional success through academic education often remained difficult. With the beginning of National Socialist rule, it was completely blocked.

On the portal, overview chapters focusing on subjects of study or historical developments provide a thematic introduction, while exemplary biographies give an insight into individual lives. Special attention is always paid to the original documents from the university archives that supplement the texts.
